Dr. Mac: Gifts for a happy Mac-holiday

It's that time of year again, and I've got gift ideas for everyone on your list no matter how much or how little you like them.

If you love them a lot (a real lot), who wouldn't love to find a shiny new MacBook (from $999), MacBook Pro (from $1,199) or MacBook Air (from $1,499) under their tree or bush?

Moving right along, if a notebook computer would strain your budget, how about...

Weirdest Unsolicited "Holiday Gift Guide" Swag of All Time

This is the time of year when I receive lots and lots of phone calls and unsolicited packages from flacks (i.e. public relations folks) and marketing weasels who hope I'll mention their product in one of my Holiday Gift Guide™ columns. Sometimes the items are appropriate. This one, from a company I've never heard of nor spoken to (Kingman Training), was not. It showed up on my doorstep today with a nice note from the founder and CEO that, among other things, explained that it is a, "unique holiday gift for your husband, boyfriend, or teen who has everything."

Since it has nothing whatsoever to do with a Mac or iPhone, there's no chance it'll be in a Dr. Mac column. But it was such a weird thing to find on my doorstep that I just had to share it with y'all.

Enjoy!

MacHeist nanoBundle: How can you not love free apps?

MacHeist nanoBundle

We like to think of our job as helping introduce the great indie software out there to you guys, the Mac users. Over the past 3 years, between heist prize apps and discounted software bundles, we’ve distributed over 4 million software licenses to hundreds of thousands of Mac users around the world.

But as we stared at this year’s bundle, thinking of ways to reach as many Mac users as we could with this collection of amazing apps, we had a crazy idea. The kind of idea that at first seems preposterous. An idea that involved, just this once, removing the only remaining barrier of any significance: the bundle’s price.

Say hello to the MacHeist nanoBundle. It’s the same bundle of quality Mac software that you know and love… but it’s entirely free.

Download it. Enjoy it. And tell your friends about it, because it’ll be gone in under a week, never to return again. Grab it now!

Six (or maybe five) apps for free? How can you not love that?

Dr. Mac: An app for just about anything

With more than 85,000 applications available for the iPhone and iPod touch, there is almost certainly an app for whatever it is you love. I've been working on a new book that will feature descriptions of the best apps in more than a dozen categories and have been spending a lot of quality time testing various ones. Here are a few that really impressed me:

Still working on new book (Incredible iPhone Apps For Dummies); still listening to loud music. It feels like Groundhog Day again. And again.

Dr. Mac: Photoshop Elements 8: Like Photoshop CS4 only easier

A few weeks ago, I said that nothing comes close to Adobe Photoshop when it comes to digital image editing. Now I'm going to have to eat those words because Adobe's just-released Photoshop Elements 8 not only comes close, it's probably a better choice (than Photoshop CS4) for most non-professional users.

Although Elements 8 offers many of Photoshop CS4's most useful features, such as the Quick Selection Tool, Spot Healing Brush, Adjustment Layers and Filters, Elements is much more than a stripped-down version of Photoshop. And though it doesn't have many of the tools aimed specifically at graphics professionals — like CMYK (process color), custom automation, fine control over text (i.e. kerning, tracking and leading), 3D objects, animation and such — it more than makes up for that with exclusive tools and features that make it simple to get great results quickly and easily.

If you record music with GarageBand, Logic, or any other sequencer, Antares Harmony EFX Vocal Modeling Harmony Generator is one of the coolest plug-ins I've ever seen. It lets you add harmony vocals to your recordings without having to actually sing the harmony part(s). It's too cool for words. Dr. Mac: Time Machine delivers when you do your part | Business | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle

Time Machine is the virtually idiot-proof backup system included with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard and 10.6 Snow Leopard.

The bad news is that it isn't turned on by default. To get its benefits, you must first perform a couple of simple tasks.

The first is to connect an external hard disk that's bigger than your startup disk; the second is to tell Time Machine you want to use that disk for Time Machine backups.
